The local currency is Kyats. The official bank and trading exchange rate is approximately 6 Kyats to 1 USD or 1 FEC but the black market rate as of june of 2005 was about 950 Kyats to 1 USD. As this rate is subject to rapid change, visitors are advised to recheck the rate before travelling. Unused Kyats cannot be converted to any foreign currency upon departure. Currency exchange controls in Burma are strict. If on your own, you should avoid changing any money in or outside of tourist hotels; the black marketers may be intelligence agents. Also, check the denominations someone is trying to sell you to see if they are current. |
Travellers
Cheques and Credit Cards In Burma you will not be able to use travellers cheques to make any purchases or pay for services. However, you can cash them in Thailand at any of the major banks. It is recommended that your travellers checks be denominated in US dollars. No acceptance of credit cards. It is therefore better to bring cash with you in small notes. Credit cash is only available with American Express and Visa at the Myanmar Foreign Trade Bank in Yangon. Please make sure to bring enough US dollar cash in small notes. |
