Balance of payment The 2002-2003 fiscal year recorded 100% growth of balance of payments to 2,573.2 million. The inflow was largely because of loans, grants and FDI. The foreign reserve of US$ 374.00 million is sufficient to finance 23 months of imports. Currency/exchange: The national currency is Ngultrum (1US$=Nu. 44.20 as of 2004, source Royal Monetary Authority) and Fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30.

Bhutanese currency is Ngultrum (Nu). It is fixed at par with the Indian Rupee which is also legal tender. In the current year (2003) approximately 46.48 Ngultrum is exchanged for US Dollar. Dollar, Dollar Traveller cheques and American Express cards along with other major international credit cards are acceptable in many hotels and tourist shop. Ngultrun will be required for shopping and personal expenses outside the capital.
