PUNAKHA WINTER TREK , 12
days
This trek will be organized from November to March only.
| Day 1: Arrive Paro by Druk Air flight |
|
| During this flight, one will experience breathtaking
views of Mt. Everest, Kanchen Junga and other Himalayan peaks, including
the sacred Chomolhari and Mt. Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro
our representative will receive you. The drive to hotel through Paro valley
is enchanting. After lunch you will be taken to Ta-dzong (museum). Overnight
hotel. |

| Day 2: Paro sightseeing | |
| Drive the winding road northwest up the Pa
chu to Drugyal dzong, the ruined fort, which once defended this valley
from the Tibetan invasions. Mt. Chomolhari, the sacred summit, reaches
skyward beyond the dzong. This can be viewed on a clear day. On the way
back you visit a typical Bhutanese farmhouse. After lunch walk up the
hill just above hotel to stretch your legs for the excursion to Taktshang
viewpoint. |

| Day 3: Paro/Thimphu | |
| This morning follow the winding road beside
the Pa chu (chu means river or water) downstream to its confluence and
then up the Wangchu to Thimphu, the capital. After lunch visit the Memorial
Chhorten where the faithful circumambulate the shrine dedicated to the
late king. Overnight in hotel. |

| Day 4: Thimphu-sightseeing | |
| A full day of sightseeing and shopping in
Thimphu. Wander in the town, visit the Handicrafts emporium. Visit the
workshop where all the handicrafts are produced. Afternoon visit Tashichhodzong.
Then drive out to the motithang area for a glimpse of the rare Takin.
Overnight at the hotel. |

| Day 5: Thimphu/Shong Pang | |
| Drive north up the valley towards Dechenchholing
palace following the Thimphu river. Motor transport will reach up to Pangrizam.
From here the trek starts towards Shong Pang, which takes about 5-6 hours
through villages. The vegetation is mainly blue pines, oak species, rhododendrons
etc. overnight in camp. Day 6: Shong pang/Dopshing Pang. The trail ascends
gradually up till you reach the Sinchula pass at about 3,490m. From this
point if the weather is clear one can see Phajoding monastery. After 2
kms. You can view Thinleygang village, the Talo monastery and the motor
highway towards the ancient capital of Bhutan. The trek drops gradually
from the pass till you reach the camp site. Overnight in camp. |

| Day 7: Dopshing Pang/Chhorten Ningpo | |
| The trek to Chhorten Ningpo is rather gradual and you will be walking into thick forests. Before reaching camp you will pass through villages and rice fields. Overnight in camp. Alt. 2,700m | |
| Day 8: Chhorten Ningpo/Zomlingthang | |
| For about 2-3 hours the trek trail will be through villages until the motor road. From the motor road you will follow the road towards the Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. Evening at leisure and those who are interested can fish in the Mochu (female river). | |
| Day 9: Zomlingthang/Limukha | |
| Follow the motor road till Punakha dzong arid
then across the Pochu river, the river that drains the remote Lunana region.
You will have a steady half-day climb into a forest of scattered long
needle chip pines. Make sure to fill your water bottles before leaving
Punakha as there is no water for a couple of hours. You will have a wonderful
view of the Punakha valley and dzong. If the weather is clear you will
have a chance to see some snowcapped mountains to the north. The camp
site is near the Limukha village. Overnight in camp. Alt. 2,250m. |

| Day 10: Limukha/Chungsakha/Wangdue | |
| The trek trail rises gradually up through
the forest of oak species and rhododendrons till you reach the Dochula
pass. Then descend through the thick forest till you reach a small monastery
dedicated to Lam Drukpa Kuenley. From Chungsakha you can look across the
valley to Samtengang on the ridge to south. Walk downhill till you reach
the motor road and then drive for about half an hour to Wangdue. Overnight
in the lodge. |

| Day 11: Wangdue /Punakha /Paro | |
| After breakfast visit Wangdue Dzong, standing
at the confluence of Punakha Chu and Tang Chu river. Shabdrung Ngawang
Namgyal built this fortress in 17th century. It holds the attractive festival,
which is celebrated in autumn. After that drive to Punakha, the old capital
town of Bhutan. Visit sacred Punakha Dzong, the old capital town of Bhutan.
Visit sacred Punakha Dzong, the superb example of Bhutanese architecture.
Fire, earthquake and floods have inflicted their devastating influence
on this Dzong, which under the direction of the present king has been
restored completely. The remains of the Shabdrung are entombed here in
the Chapel of Machin Lhakhang. After lunch, drive to Paro. O/N at the
hotel in Paro. |

| Day 12: Paro Depart | |
| After early breakfast drive to Paro airport for flight to onward destination | |
