Treasures of the antique - Tripolitania and Cyrenaika, 8 Days

Tripoli - Sabratha - Benghazi - Ptolemais - Quasr Libya - Al Bayda - Cyrene - Apollonia - Zliten - Leptis Magna - Tripoli

  • Day 01 : Tripoli
    • Arrival at Tripoli Airport. Meet and assist by our local guide and Transfer to town. Short city tour through the old town with ist traditional Souk. Dinner and overnight stay in Tripoli at Al Kabir Hotel or similar.

  • Day 02 : Tripoli
    • After breakfast the remaining day is reserved for sightseeing in Tripoli. You will visit the national museum and the Ahmed Karamalli Pasha Mosque. Lunch in the traditional Alburai restaurant, one of the oldest in the medina of Tripoli. After a short break at the hotel we will continue the tour of the medina (the old town) with its narrow alleys, its elegant mosques and famous Souk. Overnight stay in Tripoli.

  • Day 03 : Tripoli - Sabratha - Benghazi
    • Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to Sabratha which was selected as an Emporium, and trading post, by Phoenician merchants. Sabratha has one of the magnificent and interesting Roman Theatres and one of the most splendid mosaics of the Byzantine period. Lunch in Sabratha. More highlights in Sabratha: Our visit will include the Mausoleum of Bes, the Basilica of Apoleius, continuing with the Forum, the centre of social life, the Antonine Temple, the Basilica of Justinian, the Curia, the Baths, and the Temple of Isis. Transfer to the airport. Flight to Benghazi. Dinner and overnight stay in Hotel Ouzo or similar.

  • Day 04 : Benghazi - Ptolemais - Quasr Libya - Apollonia
    • After breakfast departure to Ptolemais; the city was founded in the 3rd century B.C and was originally a port for the City of Barce. Later on the Romans took over and Ptolemais became capital of the province of Libya during the government of emperor Diocletian. In Byzantine time Ptolemais became capital of the Cyrenaika. The antique Ptolemais is not yet completely excavated because the ruins are extended over a very large area. We start our visit with the Museum which host some of Ptolemais monuments, the Columns Palace, the great cisterns and the Arche of Triumph. Lunch in a restaurant on the excavation sites. Drive to Qaser Libya, known as the Old Olbia as it had been referred to in the Sinesio ( Bishop of Cyrene ) letters in the 5th century A.D and was the residence of its bishop. It has two Churches of a great religious interest and who are known for its splendid 50 mosaics pieces which can be visited in a small museum nearby.
      Dinner and overnight stay at the Al Manara Hotel or similar in Apollonia.

  • Day 05 : Apollonia - Cyrene - Benghazi
    • After breakfast departure for the excursion of the City of Cyrene; the history of the founding by Greek immigrants from the Island (modern Santorin) has been handed to us as a mixture of legend and historical tradition. Visiting Cyrene; The Forum and Agora, The Acropolis Hill which is still yet to be excavated, continue downhill to visit the Fountain and the Sanctuary of Apollo and the Great Temple of Zeus. Lunch in a typical Libyan restaurant. After lunch we visit Ancient Apollonia, which was Cyrene's port for a thousand years. The ruins form an essential part of the whole archeological complex, originally constructed by the Greeks when they began to develop their naval merchant fleets. Remainings of Byzantinium architecture are still to be encountered, such as the well preserved Hellenic City Walls of Apollonia, The Theatre, Churches and the Roman Baths. We conclude our visit with the Museum which include some of the area's heritage, drive to Benghazi dinner and overnight at Hotel Ouzo.

  • Day 06 : Benghazi - Zliten
    • After breakfast a leisurely tour through Benghazi with a visit to several of the market places, the house of culture and the cemetery of Worldwar II. Lunch in a typical Libyan restaurant. Afterwards flight to Tripoli and departure to Zliten. Arrival late in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Zliten.

  • Day 07 : Leptis Magna - Tripoli
    • After breakfast departure to Leptis Magna. One of the most well preserved sites of the antique. The visit starts with the Arch of Septimius Severus, we continue to the Baths of Hadrian, the Nymphaeum and the Street of Colonnades, the Severus Forum and the adjoining Basilica, the Harbour which was originally the natural mouth of the Leptis Vally, continued with the Old Forum which dated to the beginning of the imperial era. Lunch break in restaurant Addiafa in Leptis Magna. After lunch we continue the visit with the Museum and finally with the Amphitheatre built in the period of Nero. Drive to Tripoli. Dinner in the restaurant Asheera. Overnight stay in Tripoli in Hotel Al Kabir or similar.

  • Day 08 : Tripoli
    • After breakfast you may use the opportunity to go shopping or discover the Souk in your own pace. Transfer to the airport.

    Important Note: On Mondays museums are open 08.30 a.m. to 02.00 p.m. only,
    Friday is like Sunday in Europe, all Souks are closed.
