Libya is a country of fascinating beauty and of breathtaking contradictions: the ambitious metropolis Tripoli, the fertile region by the coast, the unique reports of Phoenician and Roman past as well as the impressive beauty and secludedness of the Sahara arouse enthusiasm of any visitor. Our 8 day tour gives an excellent insight of the historical and of Modern Libya.
Arrival in Tripoli. Meet and assist at the airport. Departure towards Gharian and onwards to Yefren. Dinner and overnight in Yefren in a Ottomanic Castle which is situated on a hillside and therefore offers you a fantastic view. Excellent cuisine. Drive to the traditional village Jado. You visit the typical traditional Berber housing. Continue to Kabao stopping along the way and visiting the Berber castle where Berbers used to store their grain and oil during their long transfers to new lands looking for water and vegetation. We continue through the Sinawen desert to Ghadames. Dinner and overnight in Ghadames in Hotel Dar Ghadames. Today the whole day is dedicated to visiting Ghadames situated at the beginning of the Sahara, an ancient Caravanning centre and a traditional settlement in Libya. The old town of Ghadames is still a 'living bridge' between traditional and cotemporary architecture. Ghadames oasis forms a part of the sub region of Gharyan, one of the five sub regions of the Tripoli region. Moreover, it is one of the most important trade routes, connecting central Africa with the Mediterranean sea coast. One story records that a party of travellers from Yemen passed through the valley where Ghadames is located. They stayed overnight and when they moved on in the morning, they forgot their food container. Early morning departure to Tripoli. On the way we stop for a visit at the well preserved Berber fortress in Nalut. We will see another fortress in Qasr al-Hadj, where we can still find small Berber settlements. Dinner and overnight in Tripoli in Hotel Al Kabir or similar. After breakfast departure to Sabratha which was used as an Emporium, or trading post, by Phoenician merchants. Sabratha has one of the most magnificent and interesting Roman Theatres and one of the most splendid mosaics of the Byzantine period. More highlights in Sabratha: Mausoleum of Bes, the Basilica of Apoleius, continuing with Forum the center of the social life, the Antonine Temple, the Basilica of Justinian, the Curia, the Baths, and the Temple of Isis. Dinner and overnight in Tripoli. Today is dedicated to Tripoli. In the capital city of Lybia, Arabic tradition blends in with western influences. We stroll through narrow alleys and through the Souk. The interesting exhibits in the national museum which is situated in a defiant fortification show the variable history of the country. We visit the Arch of Triumph which was founded during the Roman period in honour of Marc Aurel. The cultural imprint during the Italian settlement gives Tripoli a charming flair. Dinner and overnight in Tripoli. The native town of Emperor Septimius Severus experienced under his regency its prime time of prosperity. After Rom and Karthago Leptis magna grew to be the third largest city of the entire Roman empire. Today it is one of the most impressive archeological excavation sites in Africa. A visit of the museum gets you in the mood to enjoy further sightseeing. You stroll on the huge premises and admire the pompous buildings, marketplaces, triumphal arches, the Baths of Hadrian, the Nymphaeum and the Street of Colonnades, the Severus Forum and the adjoining Basilica, and the Harbour facilities. All of these are numerous credentials which more than justify the admission in the list of UNESCO world cultural heritage. Late in the afternoon you will drive back to Tripoli for dinner and overnight stay. Transfer to the airport
